(This is the herb that launched
Nature's Sunshine Products in America in 1972)
Capsicum (cayenne) grows as an
annual and was used regularly as a condiment by the South Americans
to add flavour, and help with digestion, and therefore, flatulence.
It is often referred to as “Queen of
the herbs”.
It is a very heating herb and needs to
be taken with food to disperse the heat throughout the Alimentary
canal, otherwise it can cause a burning sensation at stool.
Capsaicum is the compound within
capsicum that produces the heat.
This herb is very warming in general and
provides nutritional support for the circulation.
It is added to many combination herbs
for this reason and also to act as a catalyst for other herbs in the
product, helping them to perform better, and to target certain areas
in the body.
Capsicum is also used externally as a
poultice to assist with pain levels in joints.
I have also used it (in a very,
very weak liquid from a home made tincture), in inflamed eyes
from an allergic reaction. It clears the flood of pink in the eyes
and relieves the pain and inflammation.
Common names
Capsaicin, Capsicum, Cayenne, Chili
Pepper.
