Bilberry is closely related to
the North American huckleberries and blueberries They produce
fruit singly or paired rather than in clusters as the blueberry does.
They are commonly seen on the heaths, moors and in the woodlands of
northern Europe. A small, low-growing, spreading shrub about 30cm
(1ft) high, plants are covered with small, white tubular flowers in
spring which are followed in summer by blue-black berries. They thrive
in damp, acid soils in full sun or light shade. The berries are
sweet and both the fruit and the leaves are often used in herbal
remedies.
It is believed that huckleberry fruit
was eaten by British pilots (world war 2) before their night
flights to nutritionally support their vision. Bilberries and
Blueberries have the same types of nutrients as the huckleberry.
Bilberry contains nutrition for the circulation as well
as for the eyes, and the circulation around the eyes is very important for
good eye health.
Best used long term to provide good
ongoing nutrition.
