Slippery Elm is a well known soothing product. It provides mucilage which has a soothing effect on anything it touches, so it may help to relieve occasional digestive and other discomforts such as sore throats.

It is a very gentle herb with a mild flavour, and very suitable for babies and children in much smaller amounts, especially in cases of diarrhoea, but also constipation and colic. It comes in capsule form as well and this may be the better one to use for babies and children. (The capsules can be emptied into hot boiled water and left to seep. Then filter through a coffee filter or other suitable filter paper. The filtering is important if the product is being given in a babies bottle).

When mixed with water, mucilage is an easily digestible long chain of sugars (polysaccharides) that make a slippery substance. This has a coating action.

Slippery elm is also used during convalescence when at a low ebb to provide needed support... it is rich in nutrients and easy to digest. It is a very gentle herb.

Historically, early American settlers used slippery elm as a survival food.

George Washington and his troops survived for several days on slippery elm gruel during the bitter winter at Valley Forge.

It may also be used externally as a poultice on the skin for irritations and inflamed wounds, providing a protective coating and soothing effect, but best not to use it on ulcerations or sores producing pus.
