Lutein is a nutritional supplement
that may help the general health of the
eye and specifically the health of the macula
lutea. This is a yellow spot at the center of the retina,
which is at the back of the eye. The health
of the macula is dependent on the density
of the pigment, which invariably decreases
as we get older.
Lutein helps protect the
macula lutea because of its capacity to
filter short wave visible light. This intensifies
the yellow color of the macula and assists
in promoting eye health.
Carotenoids
are found in the macula of the eye, which
gives it the yellow colour. Lutein
and Zeaxanthin are yellow carotenoids found
in marigold flowers, alfalfa, dark green
leafy vegetables
and egg yolk.
Many
studies have documented the ability of these
nutrients, lutein
and zeaxanthin, to support the eyes, particularly
with respect to macular degeneration. Researchers
found a link between a diet rich in
dark, green leafy vegetables and overall
macular health and visual function.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are also high in
antioxidants which may protect the lipid
membranes of the macula lutea against oxidation.
NSP's "Perfect Eyes" also provides
Lutein. 3 mg per capsule along with other
nutrients.
Getting more lutein through dietary means
or through
supplementation is especially important
for women for their breast health.
