Black Cohosh does not actually contain any of the estrogens produced in the human body. Instead, it contains isoflavones, which are compounds that weakly mimic the body's estrogens.

Contains phytoestrogens. Some take it with Vit E.

Black Cohosh has also been used externally in a poultice form to help sores and puncture wounds.

(This is the herb that launched Nature's Sunshine Products in America in 1972)

Capsicum (cayenne) grows as an annual and was used regularly as a condiment by the South Americans to add flavour, and help with digestion, and therefore, flatulence.

It is often referred to as “Queen of the herbs”.

It is a very heating herb and needs to be taken with food to disperse the heat throughout the Alimentary canal, otherwise it can cause a burning sensation at stool.

Capsaicum is the compound within capsicum that produces the heat.

This herb is very warming in general and provides nutritional support for the circulation.

It is added to many combination herbs for this reason and also to act as a catalyst for other herbs in the product, helping them to perform better, and to target certain areas in the body.

Capsicum is also used externally as a poultice to assist with pain levels in joints.

I have also used it (in a very, very weak liquid from a home made tincture), in inflamed eyes from an allergic reaction. It clears the flood of pink in the eyes and relieves the pain and inflammation.

Capsaicin, Capsicum, Cayenne, Chili Pepper.

Nutrition for: C olon, constipation, healthy form and tone of the bowel, bile, digestion, liver,

waste elimination, cleansing colon toxins.

Cascara Sagrada is commonly named Sacred Bark, and was thus named by Spanish Missionaries who saw the inhabitants using Cascara as a laxative. It has been marketed since 1877 and used by the medical profession.

Cascara stimulates the lining of the upper intestine, producing natural peristaltic movement in this way. The glycosides, when in contact with the bacteria present in the bowel, form metabolites which enter the lining, thus producing normal peristaltic action.

It is intended for the occasional constipation situation, not for ongoing chronic constipation.

In the case of Haemorrhoids it can be helpful; as the cascara softens the stool.

Children and the elderly can tolerate this one as it is mild, but it is for the occasional use.

If taken continually the laxative effect decreases, but it continues to tone the bowel.

This is a very popular product and is also in the combination LBS 11, (also known as Herbalax).

Cascara Sagrada is non habit forming but one may become dependent on laxatives, even of the herbal kind, so adding necessary fiber and a high amount of fluids and/or high fluid content foods to the daily regime could be very helpful. Also the addition of rough grain bread rather than the white or "brown" bread could also be very helpful.

All the various types of roughage are so important for normal bowel movements and the fruit and vegetable fibers along with whole grain fibers such as oatmeal, whole wheat and whole rice is very important. Sometimes eating only one type of fiber is not enough to do the trick.

Common names

Cascara, Cascara Buckthorn, Cascara Sagrada, Chittembark, Sacred Bark, Wahoo.

Precautions:

Do not use In excess.

Not for during pregnancy or lactation without seeking professional advice.

Do not use in the presence of diarrhea, abdominal pain or vomiting.

CATNIP: 100 caps (Nepeta cataria)

Single list

300 mg per capsule.

Recommended on the label:

Adults: 2 capsules with a meal 3 times daily.

Other ingredients: Kosher gelatin and water capsule.

Nutrition for: Nervous and immune systems. May assist with acid reflux, bloating, children with colic, teething, colds, flu, chicken pox, convulsions, mumps, measles, restlessness, nervousness. May have a diuretic and perspirant effect.

Catnip is a very soothing herb and can be safely used for infants and children, but it must be in a much smaller amount.

It is a member of the mint family, and contains natural trace minerals and vitamins. Catnip nutritionally supports both the nervous and immune systems. The leaves are used in this product. Catnip is a native of the milder parts of Europe but it has been naturalised to other countries as well.

Catnip may produce perspiration without raising the temperature, (diaphoretic) thus leading to its use for colds. It also has antipyretic properties which enables the reducing of a high temperature.

I have used it for a baby relative as a drink for colic and it worked very well. You simply empty a capsule and disolve the powder with hot boiled water. Steep for a while. It is then necessary to filter it through a coffee filter to get all remaining grains out, as otherwise it blocks the teat. (plus it is not pleasant to have grains in the mouth) Mix a small portion of this mixture with water and keep the remainder in the frig in case another drink is needed. Sweeten with a little honey. This tastes nice as a warm drink.

An older chilld may be able to swallow a capsule or drink the mixture. It still needs filtering if drunk from a cup, or tip off the top clear fluid into another cup and leave any residue behind.

But please see precautions near the bottom of the page. You would not give any herb to a child or baby who is on drugs without consultation with your health professional.

In general, about catnip and cats. It is said that not all cats are attracted to the plant as not all have inherited the gene responsible for that response. They also do not eat the plant but only chew it to crush it and release the chemical "nepetalactone" and enjoy the smell. So it is not a wise move to give cats catnip as a nuitritional aid. They probably would not eat it anyway no matter how it is disguised. Also, it acts as a stimulant for the cats. (not a calming type action as in humans).

Common names: Fieldbalm, catmint, catnep, catrup, catwort.

Precautions :

If on any drugs for any problem at all, check first to see if this product is compatible.

Dandelion is a popular herb and easily accessed. It is a member of the Sunflower family and its name

comes from the French “dents de lion”, meaning “teeth of the lion” because of the coarsely serrated leaves.

The entire plant is edible and some enjoy it in tea form, usually the roasted root. This particular species is found and classed as a weed worldwide but is still considered one of the better herbs for general nutrients.

It contains potassium and usually, when taking diuretics, potassium is leached out along with the excess fluids, as there is no potassium in diuretics to replace the potassium. So that is a bonus.

Very high in nutrition it nutritionally assists the urinary system thereby eliminating toxins and unwanted excess fluid in the tissues, providing the build up of fluids in the tissues are due to the urinary and hepatic systems not doing their work well enough.

(Another reason for fluid build up is circulatory and lymphatic sluggishness, so one would use different herbs in that case).

Dandelion also provides nutrition for the liver and gallbladder, thus increasing production of bile and clearing toxic build up.

It is also present in Nature Sunshine combination herb "LIV-A" or "liver Cleanse" as it is sometimes known. (See combination list)

Common names: Lion's tooth, dandelion, blow ball.

EYEBRIGHT (100 capsules) (Euphrasia officinalis).

Single herb (aerial parts used).

400 mgs per capsule.

Recommended on the bottle:

2 capsules with 2 meals daily.

Other ingredients: Kosher gelatin and water capsule.

Properties: Anti-allergenic, Anticatarrhal, Anti-inflammatory, Expectorant, Opthalmicum.

Nutrients: Vitamins A and C, tannins, lignans and flavonoids.

Nutrition for: Eyes, liver, allergies (upper respiratory).

Eyebright has been appropriately named, high in Vit A it is a great nutritional herb for the eyes.

It is also nutrition for the liver at the same time. If there is an eye problem there is usually also a liver problem. If the whites of the eyes are discoloured and/or yellowy, then the liver is weak or overtaxed. In allergic situations the liver is also involved, so if you have "hay fever"/allergies of the upper respiratory plus eye problems, then it pays to take care of your liver as well by providing the nutrients needed.

When you wear dark glasses a lot, your body has to use more Vit A than normal for sight, so eventually, if you are not taking adequate Vit A in the diet, a deficiency may occur, and the eyes may suffer.

Working under fluorescent lights also causes higher use of Vit A and can also cause deficiencies in the eyes if the Vit A in the diet is inadequate.

It is best to avoid the use of dark glasses especially while taking the herb. Sunshine, or even simply daylight, needs to be able to activate the herb in the eyes.

A great herb used on a wide scale.

USING EYEBRIGHT AS AN EYE WASH:

Empty a capsule into a container, preferably crockery or glass, add boiled water whilst still very hot. Cover and steep for some minutes or longer. Filter out all powder. (a coffee filter is good for this) Use cotton wool swabs to swab the eyes, squeezing some of the liquid into the eye, or use an eye glass to soak the eye. An eyedropper could also be used.

A TIP FOR CONJUNCTIVITIS:

Use cold black tea to swab the eye. A brilliant home remedy that worked for myself, family and pets.

Common names: Eyebright, Meadow Eyebright, Red Eyebright.

Precautions:

If using as an eyewash make sure all of the herb powder is filtered out. Coffee filters are good for filtering.

It provides nutrients to help balance the levels of prostaglandins and serotonin in the body thus helping the nervous system.

Feverfew has also been shown to help prevent the release of enzymes and histamines from immune cells, and this may explain the herb’s traditional use for supporting joint health and comfort. A member of the sunflower family, feverfew is grown in flower gardens throughout Europe and the United States and other countries, and has been used for centuries as a nutritional aid to support the central nervous system and joint health.

Parthenolide is an active chemical naturally present in feverfew and appears to possess remarkable qualities, particularly for those who require regular and serious nervous system nutritional support.

Garlic is such a popular herb for many, both in cooking and raw in salads, and as a concentrated herb in capsule form for the extra potency.

Some do not like the smell and will not take it for fear of offending partners or friends, co workers etc. but if both partners eat it the odour is not noticed by either. If the mouth is fresh and free from gum infection, which can cause vile odours, then the smell of garlic on the breath is not unpleasant, and to some who love the smell it is far from being a problem.

The odour in garlic is due to a sulphide named allicin.

Some swallow cloves of garlic like a pill to help provide nutrients to ward off colds. I had a friend who did this and after she would stop taking it periodically, she would succumb to the common cold again. I prefer to taste my garlic in the food rather than swallow it in this fashion.

One of the oldest herbs used, dating back 5000 years, and a favouirite with Herbalists and Naturopaths.

Common names: Garlic, Garlick, Gerlick, Poor Man’s treacle, , Allium, Stinking Rose.

Precautions:

Do not take if on blood thinners.

Take with food if you have stomach sensitivities.

Do not take if feeble, emaciated or in a wasting condition.

Leaves the smell of garlic on the breath and many times through the skin.

Nutrition for: Immune, colds, circulatory, digestive, respiratory and urinary systems.

High Potency Garlic is a great way to get a stronger amount while swallowing less.

The good news for some is that the odour is almost completely absent with NSP's High Potency Garlic tablets, but if you break the tablet open you will find that its odour is strong on the inside.

There are odourless garlic products available, but some question whether the removal of Allicin, which is where the odour comes from, also removes great benefits.

NSP high potency garlic has a special coating to help control the odour. The coating contains chlorophyll which helps control odours and at the same time assuring a long shelf life.

The tablet does not break down for absorption until it reaches the small intestine, so you receive all the benefits without the taste, and this would please some who dislike the taste and/or smell of garlic.

Common names: Garlic, Garlick, Gerlick, Poor Man’s treacle, Allium, Stinking Rose.

Precautions:

Do not take if on blood thinners.

Take with food if you have stomach sensitivities.

Ginko Biloba is used as a nutritional aid for the circulation, especially to the upper body and the brain. The increased circulation provides very necessary oxygen and nutrients to these areas.

It is recognised as a powerful antioxidant, and the brain and nervous system, known to be very susceptible to free radical attacks, is advantaged with the use of this herb in many ways.

The special Time Release factor in this preparation, (due to the special coating on the tablet), allows for slow absorption of the Ginko over a 12 hour period. That is a great advantage.

Nutrients for: Immune system,, mucous membranes of the respiratory system, digestive and urinary tracts, catarrh, autonomic nervous system.

Golden Seal has been commonly used to assist in the nutritional fields for the immune system.

It also has astringent qualities, which may assist in the toning of the mucous membranes throughout the body and also the toning of the blood vessels.

The nutrients may assist in the relief of catarrhal symptoms no matter where it is located in the body. Some think that catarrh is only a nasal problem, but it is a mucousy symptom that appears whenever there is a problem. Mucous is formed, eg, when cooked food is eaten, and the bowel can have an abundance of this extra mucous, which can form hardened linings in the bowel, blocking nutrients from the villi where absorption takes place. Apparently this does not occur when raw food is eaten. When food or drink “goes down the wrong way” mucous instantly gathers to catch it and help it to be rejected from the respiratory system.

This herb is very expensive due to the short supply, and this in turn is due to over harvesting.

Fillers have not been used to produce a cheaper product. as this would cause a lesser amount of the alkaloid named hydrastine. (there is no other plant, so far known, that contains this ingredient).

Nature's Sunshine has the expertise and the technology to test for this ingredient.

The Hindu name for the substance (gurmar) means destroyer of sugar.

The leaves, when chewed, block sweet tastes in the mouth which explains the Hindi name Gurmar meaning "sugar destroyer".

It may help in reducing the taste of sugar in the mouth temporarily when put directly onto the taste buds. This in turn may reduce sugar cravings.

It is a woody climbing plant found in the tropical forests of central and southern India.

Common names:

Properties: Anti-arrhythmic, Antihypertensive, Antilipemic, Antioxidant, Cardiac, Food, Hypertensive, Hypotensive, Sympatholytic, Vasodilator.

Nutrition for: heart, circulation, heart muscle, balancing blood pressure.

Hawthorn is very popular in Europe, where it is used in a number of herbal tinctures, combinations and teas. The berries’ effects on the circulatory system have been well studied.

They have a high bioflavonoid content, primarily rutin and quercetin, which are also high powered antioxidants.

In certain countries the people make jams etc with the berries and also use the leaves and flowers. (certain species)

I had a friend who, along with her friends, used to eat these berries straight off the hawthorn hedges on the way to school, but I don't know what age she was. She may have needed the nutrition these berries contain.

Children of course would not need this herb usually, especially in the concentrated encapsulated form. When they eat the berries off the tree, usually they know when to stop, and that is entirely different to having it in concentrated form.

For adults though, the product has valuable nutrition for the heart and circulation. It is also in a combination along with garlic and cayenne pepper, named “HS 11”, a wonderful combination and one that I prefer over Hawthorn by itself.

For those that can't tolerate capsicum and/or garlic, the Hawthorn by itself is really good.

Common names: hawthorn, english hawthorn, harthorne, haw, hawthorne, may day flower, may blossom.

Precautions:

Do not use with heart and circulation drugs or blood thinners.

It has been used for poultices, baths, teas, gargles and mouth washes.

The best dietary source of silica is in whole grains. When we eat denuded grains we are not getting the benefits of this important item, along with a host of other nutrients.

Nature's Sunshine Products also has HSN-W, a combinations herb that does not contain horsetail, but is also a good source of silica, which may be better for some.

Licorice Root is a familiar name as many eat licorice confectionary. It provides nutrients to help that wound up feeling inside, the bottling up of feelings, the innermost stress, the uptight feeling. (as opposed to the outward showing, jittery nerve type stress)

I learned to drive stress free after starting a course of this herb on the advice of a naturopath. Before that I was a total mess. This was the first herb in capsule form that I ever tried.

Licorice also comes in tea bag form in supermarkets and makes a delicious naturally sweet drink. It is said that it is also used in many other food preperations throughout many countries and has done for thousands of years.

The cleansing of the villi in the bowel does not necessarily mean that diarrhoea will develop but there may be some changes if the villi need a cleanse. e.g. the motion may stay formed, but may also have some watery substance as well. This is a good thing not bad.

“Unclear” voices may also be helped with this herb by its soothing and relaxing effect.

Common Names: Licorice root, licorice, liquorice, sweet root, gan zao.

Precautions:

Should be avoided in cases of high blood pressure or when taking digitalis.

If you feel dizzy and get headaches while using Licorice stop taking it. This may happen when taking the herb for a long time. Best on short courses until you feel settled, then maintain as necessary.
